Until recently it was considered that telomerase found in ribonucleic acid, and in the synthesis of the enzyme, did not participate in the synthesis of the cell protein.
A team of Russian scientists has demonstrated that ribonucleic acid (RNA) is able to synthesize a protein that protects cells from stress. Research results can be used in the future in the fight against oncological diseases and in the search for anti-aging medicines. The results of the survey were announced by the press office of the Moscow Lomonosov University.
“It has been shown that telomerase found in ribonucleic acid encodes the protein that helps human cells resist stress … The discovery of new protein is of interest because it was identified in the synthesis of ribonucleic acid where it believed it could not be encoded synthesis of the protein). This new protein is actively studied as a component of telomerase (an enzyme that adds special repetitive sequences to DNA), “said Maria Rubusova, chemistry professor of Moscow’s Lomonosov chemistry faculty, who participated in the research.
Research on aging and renewal of the human body is closely linked to the understanding of the mechanism of cell division and the ability of cells to resist stress caused by, for example, various kinds of radiation, toxins or inadequate nutrition of the cell. The majority of cells are divided into a limited number, because DNA with each cell division undergoes losing its recurring parts, which are telomerases. Once the telomerases are minimized and reach a critical point, further cell division becomes impossible and the cell dies.
At the same time, embryonic, stem and carcinogenic cells can be virtually unlimited by virtue of this telomerase enzyme, which finally builds telomerases at the ends of DNA, thus increasing the number of cycles of cell division. “We have discovered (rimonucleic acid telomerase) may have yet another additional function if it is found in the cell nucleus and not in the cytoplasm. The study of all properties of telomerase can lead scientists to create “the elixir of youth” and contribute to the fight against oncological diseases, “says the Moscow University.
